What is the Snow Country Trail? Insights from Course Director Masato Tanaka

Masato Tanaka, SCT Course Director

Masato Tanaka is a professional adventure racer and a member of Team EAST WIND. With a remarkable record in international adventure racing competitions, he represents Japan on the global stage. Even in his 50s, Tanaka continues to captivate fans as a veteran athlete at the top of his game.

The Origin of the SCT Concept

Tanaka explains that the SCT began as an idea to organize a long trail running race, inspired by the famous Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc in Europe. While the initial concept centered on a 100-mile race circling Mt. Tanigawa, the vision evolved to encompass a broader area, connecting multiple municipalities across the Snow Country Tourism Zone.

Building the Route

Over three to four years, local municipalities, tourism associations, and other stakeholders collaborated to create a safe and accessible trail network for hikers. The result is a flexible and dynamic trail system that continues to evolve, with local residents maintaining their sections of the trail and rediscovering the charm of ancient paths.

Discovering Life Along the Trail

The SCT isn’t just about natural beauty—it’s a journey through the lives and culture of the locals. From vibrant fields of zenmai ferns drying under the sun to seasonal changes in rice paddies, the trail offers glimpses of rural lifestyles that are both enduring and deeply connected to the land.

A Trail for All Walkers

Whether you’re an experienced hiker aiming for a thru-hike or a casual traveler exploring a short section, the SCT welcomes everyone. Local guides and thoughtfully crafted model courses make it easy to immerse yourself in the region’s rich history, culture, and stunning landscapes.

Experience the Snow Country Trail—a journey that goes beyond hiking to connect you with nature, culture, and community. Whether you’re drawn to the challenge of a long trek or a leisurely walk through scenic landscapes, the SCT promises an unforgettable adventure for all.
